Overwhelmed

I know that I am not the only stitcher in this boat..... I pulled a bag full of projects from a closet.  See above.
This is the closet it came out of.
This is another room with more bags.
Same room, more bags.  I did not photograph the bags downstairs by the couch.

I thought that I would empty out each bag and organize the projects by designer.  Maybe go through a bag a day.  Well........
Here are the rough contents of bag one.  (sorry about the "cat blanket" background.  I should have been more artsy about this photo shoot).   Note the C Street Samplerworks "Need Has Nothing to Do With It" in the middle.  Ironic isn't it??

As you can see, the contents of one bag yield about 3 years worth of stitching (actually, it could even be a decade of stitching for me since I am a slow stitcher!).  It is a good thing my husband does not read this blog!

My plan is to go through all of the bags and get projects organized by designer as mentioned before.  I think I will get some big tubs from Target and divide them up that way.  This is a pretty sorry situation.  I never could understand stitchers who would work on one thing at a time and finish it before they went on to the next.  Oh, how I wish I was one of you!!!!  I definitely am afflicted with startitis!!!

Now, here is the kicker.......my friends and are I going to visit The Attic Needlework Shop in July!!!!!!!  Yikes!

I get dizzy just looking. I AM one of those one-at-time stitchers!! I just, I don't know, can't leave a project undone. It is actually rare that I leave the final finishing undone too. I just like/desire the completeness. :)

I FEEL your pain. I GET this! This is me also. I, too, find it overwhelming. My mom and sister finish everything before they move on. For some reason, I missed out on sharing from that gene pool. Good luck! I'm struggling with this now too.

Wow Laura....are these all things you've started or projects kitted up ready to start? I have a bin of kitted up stuff, some of it years old darn it. If only we had more time! I'm trying to get my WIP/UFO basket down to a reasonable number but have some BAP's that I can't even imagine getting done for years. It definitely overwhelms me too but I keep reminding myself that buying, stashing, kitting projects and dreaming of stitching them is all part of this hobby, it's not only about the finishes! Take care and have fun with your organizing.

You are not alone!!! I have many of those same projects plus drawers and bins full:)

I am afraid I will run out of life before I get through my stash.

But you do have stash security--that's the bright side.

Happy Stitching.

Laura,
Wow! You have some great projects and you have them kitted so half the battle is over. What a great stash ready for retirement days. You won't have to shop, just stitch. Have the buds over and keep at it. Looks like all fun to me! All in how you see it.

At least you can find your stuff yet!,, ha!

Oh my, your bags made my head spin! Good luck with your sorting! Wishing you and your pals a wonderful trip to The Attic in July! Have a wonderful weekend, Laura!

PS I agree with pj's comment about the stash you will have for retirement stitching.

Laying a bag down in a closet is so easy isn't it? It's amazing how quickly things accumulate. I need to go thru my stash too. A couple of times I've simply gifted things I didn't think i would stitch. Didn't spend any time trying to sell them. I'm not very organized but I do have charts together, kits together, fiber together. Looking forward to hearing more about your process !

This sounds like great fun--I love organizing. You will discover lost and hidden treasures. A girl can never have too much needlework--enjoy your trip to the Attic

Wow...So many projects and fun stash! I am resisting the urge to stash. There's so much I want! You're so lucky to get to go to the Attic. It's on my "to do" list for someday. :)

I'm so glad that I am not alone! I have a few Rubbermaid Totes full in addition to piles. I prefer not to think about it too much :)
Have a great time at The Attic! Can't wait to hear all about it!
Blessings, Patti

Well, I truly think we all have an addiction! Thanks goodness it is fairly harmless except on our bank accounts. Have fun at the Attic!!

Laura,

Welcome to bag lady anonymous! I do the same thing! I am great for spending countless hours searching for things that I know I put "somewhere"

That looks all too familiar. lol
I have similar stash.
I also say that I'm saving it all for retirement. :)
That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

lol! Ah yes, the stash problem. lol! I have hurricanes to thank for my stash being at least somewhat organized. When I was so stressed by hurricanes, I got my stash organized in my file cabinets. It's been a year and a half now -- I need to organize again! Lucky you and your friends for going to the Attic in July!!!

You are in good company my friend!!!! Why waste time organizing when u could be stitching?? Lol. I am both....I finish what I start but I am continually shopping for more. I don't even pretend I can stitch it all in my lifetime. I keep all mine in tubs back in the basement cause I'm afraid a tornado might blow it to Oz!! Really!!! Oh well....at least you gals understand!!!!

You are far from being alone,
But isn't it fun??!!

Melissa said...

Oh, Laura, how I laughed! Yup, been there, done that!

I have my projects organized in some baskets that I can fit onto this shelf which has made things a bit easier. However, you know, stash grows, and now I have a bag or two floating around out there!

You'd better get organized before your next stash haul at the Attic! lol. YGG!

You are not alone! And it is overwhelming...so I just try to not look at it too closely, LOL!!

I like Jeanne's comment about dreaming, stashing also a part of the hobby...because it is! I've been bad of late and purchased some new patterns when I already have enough to work with in one lifetime! It is great to organize though. Definitely grab some bins from Target and make one a WIP bin so whenever you get an urge to stitch, grab something from the bin!! Hugs!

Well, your Mother is pissed!!! You didn't tell your fans why your closet floors are so filled w/x stitch projects??? And who cleaned and organized your craft room 3 times!!!! Do you know who this is????

Bekca said...

My goodness, that's a lot of projects! I'm afraid I'm in the other camp, I can't start something until I've finished the first one. Although I do normally have two projects on the go, one big and one small :)
It should be fun going through it and sorting, who knows what you might discover :)
Best wishes.

LOL, that is a LOT of projects!!

Never mind it is the process of stitching we are supposed to enjoy, not just the finished article :-)

Melody said...

You don't have a lack of projects! Actually, neither do I. But, I am generally more comfortable stitching one at a time. But, I do have 3 that I can think of that are in process. Two of them because they are all done except the fiddly parts that I wasn't keen on tackling. I need to make myself go back and finish them up. It's good to organize your stash tho. It has to be like visiting old friends... LOL.

I'm dying over here; what a great stash!

All I can say is you're a kindred spirit!! :-)

Cross stitch as a hobby has many facets: buying the chart, choosing the fabric and threads, stitching the piece, deciding how to finish it, and the final finishing. But there is also drooling over blogs with other projects, searching the internet for more charts, learning how to make pincushions and pillows... and Pinterest and EBay! We have to live long into retirement, with our eyesight and non-arthritic hands intact if at all possible! Thanks for being so brave as to share one bag! I loved it!

woolwoman said...

You are definitely a kindred spirit !!! I have a room full of not only cross stitch but needlepoint, rug hooking and enough yarn to open my own store. Thankfully I am not a stasher of quilting fabric although I do have a few fat quarters I have gotten for "finishing". I agree with someone else who said " why spend time organizing when you could be stitching" You know I don't criticize those who stitch one project at a time. My dad is one of those - he will crank out one of those huge Mirabilia's in about 4 mos and then on to the next. It takes all kinds to make the world go around. Be yourself and have enjoy the journey. That is my motto and I'm sticking to it. Hugs Mel

All is can say is LOL- sorry but LOL!!! Looking at those pictures brought back many good memories for me...Especially Sachi the Elephant. And of course I am in the same boat as well...

Good luck on organizing. I tried it by designer, by subject, by size, and I end up tearing through them all and making a mess when looking for the next project. So I gave up. The Attic? Better buy an extra bin at Target.

Now I don't feel so bad about my stash organizing system aka no system LOL There's something about my disorganized stash pile, WIP's, etc. that makes me feel comforted. I also enjoyed seeing all your project bags!

I can totally understand what situation you have!
You are not alone, I'm the one who starts new stuff even having so many WIPs!
And I hope I could be the one who does one at time!
I found BBD's Feast of Friendship that I have in my "next start" list! :D

1. - I can't believe you actually posted pictures! LOL! I ran them over to my DH to prove I am not the only one that has bags and boxes of things I will never get to but love.
2 - if we don't support the shops and designers, they will go away. So I think of it as an investment in the industry that provides endless hours of enjoyment to me.
3. Stitching is not a competitive sport. If all my bills are paid and my family is fed, why not spend a few dollars on my own happiness! I counted 30 WIP/UFO projects on my list. It gives me variety to pick up what I am in the mood to stitch. Unlike ice cream sundaes, there should be no guilt involved in something you love.

Enjoy your stash!

I am not a stitcher, but I am a tote aficionado. So, what I noticed first about this post was all the cute totes you have. Aren't I silly?

Hi! After meeting you today I had to come and see your blog. Fabulous!! I have to tell you, the Prairie Schooler June sampler that you have started saved my stitching life in 2010. I had been through a rough year in 2009 with a particular individual that believed she had the right to control - or try to control - my stitching and designing. I broke off the "relationship" but was so upset, mostly with myself that I'd tolerated what amounted to abuse for so long, that I couldn't pick up my needlework without getting angry all over again. Especially if it was something I was designing.
I finally decided to stitch that little PS sampler as a gift for my mother's friend, June, who has the greenest thumb I have ever seen.
Stitching that little sampler allowed me to work through my angst and once again I was able to approach my needlework with joy.
that little sampler now lives in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with June. I l-o-v-e that little sampler from afar for what it gave back to me.
